Ch.7 part 1 - part 3

In this chapter Mrs.Montague arrives with her friend named Arthur. She has come to stay until Monday, and she and Arthur are both very into supernatural happenings. At first they are starting to get on every ones nerves a little because they act in a very cocky attitude toward everyone. She even calls Luke a coward and that he should be ashamed at his fears. They go to dinner and talk a little about Arthur, and that he is a headmaster and has to get back to school soon. Then later Mrs.Montague comes back after using the planchette, it is a form of automatic writing used to communicate with the supernatural. She says it mentioned something about a nun and someone named Helen, Helene or Elena. (As soon as I saw Elena I thought of Eleanor). Then they all go back to ask it some questions. First she asked it who it was, and it said Nell, Nellie and Eleanor. Then they asked what it wanted, and it said "HOME". Then they asked what it was doing, and it said "Waiting", and when they said what for it said "Home". Then they asked what they wanted and it said "Mother", and when they said why, it said "Child". Then they asked where is your mother, and it said "Home", and when they said where is your home it said "Lost,Lost,Lost".
This part kind of ties together everything that they have seen, like "Help Eleanor come home", and when they heard the child at night and when she thought she saw children and their parents having a picnic. This book is really starting to get interesting.

Ch.6 - Ch.7

In this chapter it starts out with Luke and Eleanor just talking on the stairs for a while just about each other. Then Luke goes inside into the library, and he comes out of the library excited with a book. He shows it to everyone, it is a book written by Mr.Craine to his daughters. The book is almost like a scrap book because there are lots of pictures, and then writing under them. They start looking through it and find many strange things like what he wrote about Hell, and what he wrote about Death. The things in the book should not have been in there for little children. Then they go back to the fire and talk some more. They all are starting to get on each others nerves a little bit except for the Doctor who just seems to be observing it all.
Then Eleanor angry decides she needs to go outside even though it is dark. Theodora follows her and they just walk on and on to nowhere, it seems like they know the exact move of one another and they make the some exact same movements. Then all of the sudden it seems like they are being followed but they wonder if it is just their imaginations. Then it seems as if the path almost ends, Eleanor starts to hear children laughing and playing. She looks and sees a family having a picnic with their little puppy and they are all having a great time. Then Theodora screamed, she said " don't look back, just run". So they ran and ran until they smashed through the back door of the house and into the kitchen to find Luke and the Doctor who have been looking for them. They seem like they have gone mad and they just say they saw a picnic. Theodora is laughing, and then Eleanor looks up to see Luke and the whole room is rocking madly and it seems like time just stops.

Ch.5 part 3 - Ch.6

In the beginning of this part they are all talking about what has happened so far, and about just being afraid. Eleanor is paranoid about everything now and is worried about what she says, and everything she does. Even the little things worry her like when she says something wrong, and wonders if she made a fool out of herself. Then they go to bed. Eleanor and Theodora are in the same room now and are holding each others hands very tightly while they are going to sleep (just so they know each other are there). Then it becomes very dark even though she thought she left the light on, and she gets a chill of the cold air like from before. Then she starts to hear a low voice mumbling, but it is too low to understand. Then she started hearing a little laugh every once and a while. She tries to speak, but cannot because she is frozen. Then she hears the sound of a child sobbing saying "go away, please don't hurt me". When she hears that it drives Eleanor crazy, she doesn't want any child to be hurt and she wants it to stop so she yells "STOP IT". Then she gets up and the lights are on just as they left them and Theodora is sitting up in her bed startled, and then Eleanor wonders whose hand she was holding the whole time?!?

Ch.5 part 2 - Ch.5 part 3

In this part it starts to get even more exciting. At first they are all just sitting around reading or playing games and then go to bed. Then the next mourning (Their third mourning) the doctor and Luke go around the house checking for cold spots. In one place it is even to cold for the Doctor or Luke to hold there chalk, but for some reason it does not come up on the thermometer. Eleanor and Theodora explore the outside property and find a garden and some flowers. They all feel isolated in this house and wonder where Mrs.Dudley gets all the food. They say they feel like they are on a desert island. Then they go back to their rooms and Eleanor hears a shriek from Theodora. She runs into her room to find a horrible smell and what looks like blood smeared everywhere. They try to tell themselves that it is just red paint, but do not understand the smell. They Eleanor goes and gets Luke and the Doctor. Then they notice more writing on the wall above Theodora's bed it says "HELP ELEANOR COME HOME ELEANOR" in dripping red letters.Theodora opens her closet and finds her clothes are all covered in red also. The Doctor decides to close Theodora's room and have Theodora move in with Eleanor. The Doctor says they must not let Mrs.Dudley come in here, and he says he will examine this more closely tomorrow.

Ch.5 part 1 - Ch.5 part 2

This part of the book they are just waking up from their second night of being in "Hill House". They all say that they slept well despite the fact that they might have encountered a ghost or a spirit. They all start talking and Dr.Montague assures them that no one ever got hurt physically in "Hill House". Then they go have a nice breakfast made by Mrs.Dudley. They find it funny when they ask her for ten extra minutes to talk after breakfast before she cleans up; and she insists that she cleans up at 10 o'clock. She must do everything exactly on time and as planned. Then they are walking down the hall and notice something very strange. They see some writing on the wall. It is written badly in chalk and reads " Help Eleanor come home". They are all very freaked out and wonder if it was a prank but cannot figure out who would do it. Then they start blaming each other for doing it; and also comfort Eleanor and say it could have been any ones name and that she shouldn't worry about it.

Ch.4 part 3 - Ch.5

In This part of the book it starts to finally get exciting. It is the afternoon of their second day, and they are all kind of tired and just sitting around. Eleanor is getting her toenails painted by Theodora and Luke is sleeping. Then they decide to look around the house some more. They walk into the nursury and get a strange chill of air that almost takes their breathe away, and the dont know where it is coming from. They are all starting to feel a little weird and realize it is past five so go back to the parlor and have some coffee. They take all the lamps and comfortable furniture from different parts of the house to put in the paror so it is a comfortable welcoming room to go to. Then they talk a little bit and Dr. Montague and Luke play chess. After that they all tiredly go to bed.
Then Eleanor wakes up with a chill and hears some noises and Theodora yelling. So she rushes over to her room. Theodora says she heard some banging on doors and it frightened her. Eleanor thinks it is sort of funny but then down the hall they hear the "bang bang" on another door. They notice that the banging is going from one door to the next, and getting closer to them; like it is almost looking for someone. They are both very scared and are very cold. Eleanor yells out for it to go away; but then realizes that she has given away her location. Then finally it gets to their room and starts banging on the door, up in the top corner to high for anyone to reach. They feel a sickening cold rush into the room and wonder where Luke and the Doctor are. The door is shaking violently until the hear the voices of Luke and the Doctor coming and then it slowly goes away. Then finally the Doctor and Luke arrived to Theodora's room and they sat down. It was four in the mourning and Luke went to go get some Brandy to drink to relax them. Luke said the reason they didnt come sooner was because the Doctor saw some animal like a dog run past his room and they chased it all the way outside to the garden. They noticed that whatever "it" was wanted them separated and that when they were together it went away. They realize now that they need to stay together from now on.

In this section they are just waking up from their first night inside of the "Hill House". Everything is fine and normal except it is gray and rainy out. Eleanor feels exceptionally well and was very comfortable. Dr. Montague wakes up first with Luke and Theodora was third. They go down and have a nice breakfast that Mrs. Dudley has set out and then decide to explore the house. It also talks about how perfect everyhing is that Mrs. Dudley does. She has breakfast out at nine and cleans up at ten; then she constantly remindes them everything has to go back on the shelves because she puts out lunch at one, and will clean up at two. They realize that all the doors swing shut after you let go of them unless you put something in front of them. As they explore the house Dr. Montague explains why they have so much trouble finding any of the rooms and often get lost. He says that the builder hated regular, ordinary houses so he set all of the rooms off balance. Also some rooms are on a tilt and the rooms do not face eachother at normal angles. That explains why you may think you are in one place of the house but really not. Also he says that it will also give you sea legs after a while because the house is on a tilt. At one point Eleanor almost falls of the veranda because she feels dizzy. Then after they go to have the lunch Mrs. Dudley made which was a souffle. Then it ends with Mrs. Dudley saying "Its five minutes of two".

Eleanor and Theodora just sit by the fire and talk about themselves and what their lives have been like. Then they are all tired and decide to go to bed. Eleanor goes to bed and realizes she is kind of scared and ends up sleeping with her head under the sheets. Theodora sleeps with the light on, and Luke slept on his bedside table holding a flashlight. As they sleep Dr. Montague reads a book and occasionally stops to listen and see if anything is going on.

In this chapter of the book Eleanor and Theodora are returning back to "Hill House" late after going out adventuring. When they return they meet Luke and Dr. Montague. They all go inside and celebrate for the success of "Hill House". Then they all spend a little time to introduce one another and find out who they will be living with. Then one of them asks the qustion "why are we here, and whats wrong with this house". Dr. Montague says he will tell them the story of the house in the morning because he doesnt want anyone to leave in the dark; just incase they decided that. Finally after dinner they convince him to tell the story, and so he does. He says that he first heard of the house from a friend who left after only a few days but had no explanation why. So he tried to talk to other former tenants who all left before their lease was up but could not give a good explanation why and were generally bitter on the subject. So Dr. Montague looks into some of the old newspapers from Hillsdale. He discovers the real story of the "Hill House". Which is is that a long time ago a man built it for his wife and his two daughters. When his wife was on her way to see the house for the first time she was killed in a freak accident when her buggy turned over in the driveway. Then later he got remarried only to have his second wife also die in a freak falling accident. Then finally he remarried again only to have that wife die of consumption in England where they were visiting doctors. After that Hugh Crain left the house and his two daughters were sent off to family members. Later the oldest daughter inherited the house and not long after died of pneumonia inside the house. Then there were many issues over who the house should go, to and in the end was given to a village girl which angered the younger sister. The younger sister argued over the house for a long time until the village girl finally committed suicide by hanging herself in the house. Then the house was given to the Sandersons' who now own it today. Then it ends with Luke saying "I'm sure we will all be very comfortable here"......Yeah right

Part 5 Ch.1 - Ch.3

In this part of the book Eleanor Vance is just arriving at "Hill House" it is a long bumpy ride up, and is far away from everyone else. When she gets to the entrance she meets Mr.Dudley, the caretaker who is kind of strange and mysterious and at first he doesn't want to let her in. she has to insist that she was wanted there for him to let her in. When he opens the gate and she begins to drive in he says to her "You'll be sorry I ever opened that gate" and I think that is foreshadows what is to come. When she gets to the house, she notices that the house kind of has a look of despair and sadness. Then she gets her bag and goes in. Mrs. Dudley is in the house and shows her to her room, and Eleanor realizes that she is the first one there. Mrs. Dudley is also kind of strange like her husband and says "dinner is at six, she will clean up in the morning and breakfast is at nine". She also says that it is what she agreed to, which Eleanor is not really sure who she made the agreement with and later makes a joke about it being with Dracula. She gets into her room and notices that the entire inside of the building looks like it was rushed when it was made, and that the builders just wanted to do as little as possible and get out as soon as possible. She starts telling herself she is going to leave and feels like no one else is coming. Even Mrs. Dudley leaves after she makes dinner at six and says she gets out before it gets dark, also she says that there is no one to help you and no one to hear your screams which Eleanor kind of finds funny.
Then Eleanor hears a car door slam and finds Theodora has arrived which cheers her up. Theodora and Eleanor start to become good friends and joke about everything that is going on. Then they decide to adventure off around the property before it gets dark and they realize it is kind of beautiful out there with the mountains and the streams. Then they start to realize it is getting dark and must start heading back to the "Hill House".

Dr. Montegue gives presice directions on how to get to the "Hill House" because the people in Hillsdale are not friendly and do not enjoy talking of "Hill House", but she stops there for coffee anyway.
